Synopsis: A first time documentary filmmaker offers a compelling insight into a devastating reality of breast cancer, as seen through the eyes of several female patients helping demystify the disease while painting poignant and often humorous intimate portraits of survival. The film depicts the process of learning and accepting the terrifying verdict, and details the complexities of every stage of this disease. All interviewed patients have different experiences living with mutilated bodies while still maintaining strength. This film is not only invaluable as a testament to human resilience but it also proves that it's possible to blossom in the face of adversity. But as the fight continues, the wisdom and beauty within us can help us conquer the beast until we find the cure.

When Life Imitates Art | CRIMINAL MINDS

“…It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
 –Frederick Douglass

Saw an episode on CBS’s CRIMINAL MINDS about this quote last night.  Entitled “The Wheels on the Bus,” this very quote was used near the close of the show.  Here’s my recap.

Two demented latch key young men, a product of divorce, waste away their after school hours  and become masters in playing video games.  Always shown sitting on the living room sofa, the director fast-forwards the viewer through several years of the brothers Josh and Matt incessant game playing, from young adolescence up until their present day ages of a young adult in high school.  They become confrontational within their own competitiveness and at the same time, bored with their mastery skill set, they fall into an abyss of reality and illusion and proceed to devise their own video fantasy game, but in real life game.
----

PRESENT DAY 2013 - EXTERIOR SHOT - DAY - AFTERNOON

Somewhere on the back roads of rural Virginia these boys use a stalled vehicle as a rouse to ambush a school bus filled with the bus monitor, driver of course and students— but kidnapping only ten of the students.  These chosen ten in fact, have been predetermined by a set of parameters these crazy boys have concocted in their heads and would no doubt, impress any forensic psychologist.

INTERIOR - ISOLATED BARN

Abandoning the bus and the unwanted students in an old barn the chosen ten are driven to an isolated location outfitted like a modern day Rambo is king of the camp and outfitted with a slew of big brother high tech surveillance cameras and equipment.  These innocent, doe eyed students become the brother’s game pieces and are held like GITMO prisoners in a community cell similar to those shown in ‘human experiment’ projects.  A dark, dank and cold environment heightens the student’s anxiety as they’re left to wonder why they’re there in the first place, if they will be killed like their school bus driver, and what the hell is really going on.

The player with the most ‘kills’ scores and wins…  but of course.  That’s how it usually works.  So as these crazy boys peer at their captives through surveillance monitors, they bark directives to these scared kids, through blue-tooth technology earpieces and are psychologically controlled and manipulated into carrying out directives.  Failure to comply will result in a long taser-shock thru an electronic necklace so anchored.

Big brother-type stuff going on here.

These kids are further dehumanized by being called a number rather than by their given names. Crazy right?  Yep.  “Number two and number five step forward,” we hear in voiceover.  "The game will commence in three, two, one."

I hate it when they cut to a commercial just when the getting's getting good.  Don't you?
But continuing with my recap, and P.S., I really think Mark Gordon (no relationship to me) and Jeff Davis need to pay me for this critique--

In one game round we see a female student preselected by the brothers because of her strong willed persona being coersed and ultimately she is forced to kill her male friend, Trent-- in spite of her decidedness.  "They said they'd hurt my family," Addyson screams out into the air after she takes the kill shot.  (A little out of sync embellishment there.)

Adding insult to injury to the overall pretext of “the game,” the viewer is shown an element of gender bias as the younger brother says to his older brother, "A girl.  Dude, I beat you with a girrrrrlllll,” contributing to his folly.

Needless to say my favorite techie guru Penelope Garcia (next to Abby on NCIS) works her computer magic, locates the abandoned makeshift GITMO facility and Special Agents Hotchner and Morgan come in guns slinging, just in the nick of the skinny to rescue them all.  But not before Agent Morgan levels one in the heart to the older brother who just wouldn’t stand reason to anything in the episode.  THAT brother was indeed a piece of work.  By the way, I just love those crisp white dress shirts Hotchner's wardrobe person dresses him in.

My hat goes off to the writer Kimberly Ann for this particular script.  “Brokenness of the mind and spirit.”  When life imitates art and when man blurs that fine line, we have to wonder just how damaging these fantasy games are to the human psyche.

If you've got 41 minutes and 34 seconds, you can watch the full episode here.

Calm + Serene + Breathtaking | It was the music!

♥ Music is very suggestive.
Sabine Sauermaul
Here's a true story to exemplify
 what I mean.

Years ago when Tower Records was in business, I visited one of their locations in the Metro Atlanta area central to the financial hub of town. It was hot and I do mean hot and in the heart of five o'clock traffic.  Car horns blasting, bus fumes a'smoking -- and if I recall, my gas tank was on near empty. You know the kind of day I'm describing, right?

Well anyway, although I'd pulled a long day on my feet at work, I just had to buy the new Yanni CD.  So instead of heading to the gas station, I made a bee-line across two lanes of traffic and entered into Lenox Square shopping center off one of the many Peachtree Street thoroughfares. Buying gas had become a secondary mission at the time.

When I entered the store, the a/c was most refreshing 'cause like I said, it was a sticky-hot-in-the-South day outside.  At least  98 degrees.  But only seconds after entering the store, what I then noticed was how silent the store was. How still everything was; like the calm found in Heaven.

It took my breath away.

Directly ahead of me was a guy that could have been a Sumo wrestler who had a bald head and was tattooed up the arms like crazy.  Next to him, by contrast was a skinny little guy dressed in a black leather vest (even in the heat), chains hanging from his pants pockets to hold his wallet in place (keys dangling too)... who had dyed-red hair before it was popular. I suspect he may have lived in the then hip, Virginia Highland's area which was only one MARTA (rapid transit) station away.   As I continued walking back to the enclosed listening sound room, I passed by an elderly couple in the country western section staring at a Travis Tritt CD.  She, a slight woman with perfectly coiffured dirty blonde hair and bright red nails was transfixed on the cover-- while hubby the dutiful husband, held onto her handbag wide receiver style.

And as I looked over the horizon of the store, EVERYONE was not saying a word... busy at task... each into his/her own little world... and I wondered why?

It was the music.

The store was broadcasting a newly released meditation CD. And no matter how diverse the people in the store appeared to be, we were all responding to the vibes of this beautiful music. Amazing how such a simple thing can invoke harmony and unity.  Seems like that was decades ago.  Our world wasn't in such turmoil then.

Today however the world could use a bit more meditative music.  And I wish it could be just as easy today as it was back on that day in Atlanta, to depart an ample dose of goodness in the World-- as one unknown musician's CD accomplished, back on that blistering evening in Atlanta.

It's 1:52am.  As I reflect on the fond memories above and for the assurance that 'all is well,'  Yanni's "At the Accropolis," was indeed worth the purchase.  ~djg

Legalease... of interest to artists, musicians, entertainers!

Are you aware
that law is different
for private citizens
as opposed to
commentary  or  public figures?

Credit: FanPop.com
THAT public figures (i.e., celebrities) who depend on their "fans," in essence to make a living-- actually places them into a quirky category of legal protection by law.  In similar fashion, commentators may be subject to ridiculous caricature/parody.  And WHO, exactly, is a public figure?  Have you 'assumed [through a set of specific actions on your part], a role of special importance in society' ... 'where public attention is focused upon you?' (Black's Law Dictionary)

This is going to be a long post but will be well worth the read.

Vast sums of monies are spent by industry creatives to ensure and protect one's legal interests.  Do you understand what your attorney is explaining or does half of their jargon go over your head?  ***crickets***  Exactly... and you're not alone.  But there's light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.   May I suggest that you get one, if not both of the following eLearning courses?  Knowledge is Power!  With the information presented in our digital audio format, you may very well achieve a better self educated understanding of the all important contract.  Learn also, the substance of negligence and torts and how you're affected by this harm done to you by others.  First up!

Credit: FanPop.com

Business Law: Negligence and Torts This course addresses two important questions: When is someone else legally responsible for harm done to you? When are you legally responsible for harm done to someone else?

This digital audio course of 8 lectures discusses torts, the body of law designed to redress, through civil litigation-- harms done to persons.  Each lecture is 30-minutes in length.  Lectures 4 and 5 deal with the celebrity high-profile, occasionally controversial topics of defamation, privacy, and emotional distress. In Lecture 4, you look at the law of libel (written) and slander (oral) that damage a person's reputation. Several requirements of defamation are discussed, as well as the 'privilege to defame' which can attend commentary on public figures.  Note: 83% would recommend this course to a friend.  Cost: $90.

Next up we have Business Law: Contracts  What is a contract? How can you make one binding? How can you avoid being prematurely bound by one? What can you do to get out of a contract? What remedies are available if someone breaches your contract? What special rules apply to international contracts? When is a contract not binding? When does a mistake by either party or fraud by one of them invalidate a contract?

"...Contractual agreements are one of the principal mechanisms for ordering life in society. Whether a contract is written or oral, or even implicit, it carries with it all of the duties and obligations that society has endowed with the force of law."  --Professor Frank B. Cross

Credit: Blaberize.com

When has a contract been made? Lecture 1 explores the boundaries of contracts in law. It discusses the four main requirements that any contract must satisfy.  Lectures 2 and 3 give greater detail about the main components of a contract. One party makes an offer and the other accepts, refuses, or makes a counteroffer, but there are many possible slips in between. Which offers are binding? The preliminary issues of offer and acceptance are examined in Lecture 2, including the ability of parties to negotiate, the definiteness of a contract's terms, and terms of acceptance.

In Lecture 3, we look at three more elements of a binding contract: What each party must give up for a contract to be made ("consideration") Whether and when those of a diminished capacity, such as children or the insane, can make contracts.  When a contract must be in writing. When is a contract not binding?

Lectures 4 and 5 consider the possible reasons for declaring contracts void or breached. When does a mistake by either party or fraud by one of them invalidate a contract? When can a party successfully claim that an agreement was reached under duress? In Lecture 4, you get answers to these questions.  90% would recommend this to a friend.  Cost: $15.00 SALE PRICE ends soon!
